Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is a thermoplastic engineering plastic with a molecular weight higher than 1.5 million. Its molecular chain length is 1 0 - 2 0 times that of high-density polyethylene.
The longer molecular chains (higher molecular weight) give UHWMPE its main advantages in toughness, wear resistance, and stress-crack resistance. It is a type of polyethylene,
and also has the excellent lubricity, chemical resistance, and electrical properties of conventional HDPE. Its successful development is widely regarded as one of the ten major scientific and technological achievements of the 20th century.
